Terry Hazen is the Governor's Chair for environmental biotechnology and specializes in microbial ecology, water quality, bioremediation (chlorinated solvents, oil spills, and heavy metals), climate change, and bioenergy. His research focuses on how naturally occurring bacteria can sometimes break down and detoxify hazardous materials. Hazen holds a joint appointment with the College of Engineering's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences' departments of Microbiology and Earth and Planetary Sciences, and is a faculty member in the The Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education. He also works closely with the UT-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Joint Institute for Biological Sciences and the Center for Environmental Biotechnology and is director of the Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment.
