Mark Burton is the director of transportation economics at the Center for Transportation Research. He researches transportation planning for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, including evaluation of surface and air freight transportation facilities and operations throughout the state’s ninety-five counties.

Burton is an expert in the role that rural public transportation plays in local economic development, with an emphasis on increasing regionalism, rural demographics, and infrastructure investment, as well as the impact of jurisdictional boundaries and the value of a mobile workforce.
