Annette Engel works to understand the nature and extent of microbial activities in geochemical reactions that involve aqueous solutions and geological materials through time. Specifically, she aims to determine the extent to which microbes affect biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem-level processes and evaluate the mechanisms by which microorganisms have come to colonize so many different environments on Earth.
